How to Type a Thesis Reference Page

When writing a thesis, citing all sources is imperative. Different disciplines will require that different styles be followed. The sciences generally require American Psychological Association Style, while the humanities usually require Modern Language Association style. The following guide is meant for those using MLA formatting and adheres to the most recent edition's guidelines. Be sure to check with your school's particular requirements for margins and spacing for the final format check.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin on a separate page from the rest of the thesis. Type "Works Referenced," center aligned, at the top of the page.

    • 2

List authors in alphabetical order by last name or by the first word in the work's title if no author is available. Follow MLA conventions for the reference. Include, in order: author's name (surname first), complete title of publication, edition of publication if applicable, place of publication, name of publisher, year of publication and medium of publication.

    • 3

Format the works referenced so that the entire page is double-spaced without an extra space between entries. Entries are differentiated from one another by creating a hanging indent on the second and subsequent lines of each entry; this is done by indenting the lines five spaces.
