How to Signal Closure in an Essay

Bringing an essay to a close is tricky. Competent writing does not explicitly state "The End," or use phrases such as "in conclusion." The audience must trust in your skills as a great writer to convince them they have reached the end of the essay. As you progress as a writer, signaling closure becomes second nature.

Instructions

    • 1

Relate back to the first paragraph by emphasizing a word, phrase or idea used in the introduction.

    • 2

Restate the thesis using different words and different sentence structure.

    • 3

Use quotes that resonate with your main point to put the essay into perspective.

    • 4

Use a different or larger context to exemplify your main point. For instance, you could end an essay on methods of communication in the eighteenth century by contrasting it with the modern world's communication technology.
