Proofread your essay. For now, look for typos, misspelled words and grammatical errors. Correct these issues to start the process of fixing your essay.
Refine your thesis statement. The thesis statement explains the main topic of your essay and is usually found at the end of the first paragraph. To fix your essay, make your thesis statement stronger and more specific to the content of your essay. For example, for a thesis "Dogs make better pets than cats," you can add information and make it more specific to your topic. The statement could then read, "Because dogs are loyal, friendly and easier to train and care for, they make better pets than cats."
Reread the content of your essay with your thesis in mind. Keep referring back to your thesis statement. Make sure all the main points in your essay effectively back up the thesis statement. For example, the sentence "Cats can be trained to use the litter box" does not back up the thesis statement above. This, however, does: "Cleaning up dog waste from the yard is less time consuming than keeping a litter box clean."
Check each paragraph individually for a topic sentence. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence and should explain what the paragraph is about. The rest of the sentences in the paragraph should all relate to the topic sentence.
Make some final edits to the content of your essay. Read each sentence and ask yourself if it could be stated more clearly. Delete redundant information from paragraphs and work on the best possible word choice. For example, the adjective "energetic" is more descriptive than "fun."
