Research the essay topic at a library using credible references such as encyclopedias and journals.
List questions you may have concerning the topic as you research and learn more about it. Find the answers to these questions. Add new questions current research has not addressed, if any.
Set a timer for five or ten minutes. Write down everything that comes to mind on your particular topic. Don't worry about correct sentence structure; focus on getting your thoughts down on paper instead.
Create a "mind map" to visualize potential ideas and directions the essay can take. Circle the topic of the essay in the center of a blank page. Create a tree-like structure by connecting similar ideas to the main topic.
