Dear Diary,
Today was a day I'll never forget. I had the absolute pleasure of teaching my grandmother, Grandma Mary, a lesson in… wait for it… how to use a smartphone.
I know, I know, it sounds ridiculous. Grandma Mary is 82, and the thought of her learning to scroll through apps, take selfies, and even navigate the internet seemed as far-fetched as me flying to the moon. But, she's been wanting to learn for a while, and with my little nephew Liam starting kindergarten this year, she wanted to be able to video call him during the day.
It wasn't easy, though. The sheer amount of buttons, menus, and apps seemed overwhelming at first. I remember when I first learned how to use one myself, it felt like a foreign language. But Grandma Mary, bless her heart, was determined. She was patient, she was curious, and she was so damn excited about each little thing she learned.
We started with the basics: turning the phone on and off, finding the camera, and navigating the menus. Then came the "Grandmother's Guide to Texting", complete with a demonstration of emojis and how to send a voice note (because who wants to type when you can just talk, right?). We spent a good hour on that alone, with me laughing at her hilarious attempts to send an "LOL" with the wrong emoji.
By the end of the lesson, Grandma Mary was proudly scrolling through her photos, sending messages to her friends, and even playing a game. She even managed to video call Liam, who was absolutely ecstatic to see her on the screen!
It was such a heartwarming experience. Seeing her face light up with each new discovery, her excitement for learning something new at her age, it just made my heart swell.
I realized today that it's never too late to learn something new. And the joy of sharing that knowledge with someone you love, especially someone like my grandma, makes the whole experience so much more enriching.
