How to Make an Outline for In-Depth Reporting

Outlines assist in laying out and formatting experiments, designs or any information that is formal as in in-depth reporting (a report resulting in roughly 2,000 words or more). Planning and organizing research results in effective summaries and ease of rewriting. An outline includes five components: theme, topic, reference material, sources, angles and questions.

Instructions

    • 1

Frame the outline by the theme/topic. The topic structured outline model is the first step in creating a smoothly integrated format of central facts and key words.

    • 2

Condense the facts from your topic/theme into key words. Central facts and key words are extracted from listening and note taking in the reporting process.

    • 3

Appropriate at least three key words for each central fact. List in chronological order. Check your central facts against your key words. Did you keep to the main topic?
