How to Format an Expository Essay

Expository essays focus on information and facts. They are designed to dig for in-depth information regarding a topic and provide that information in an objective manner. The format for this type of essay is similar to most other essays, with the exception that the expository essay is always written in the third person, as opposed to the first or second person that many essays use.

Instructions

    • 1

Write an introduction that briefly explains the topic of the essay and provides at least three of the ideas you plan to present in the essay. Provide the information in a manner that will encourage the reader to continue reading the rest of the essay.

    • 2

Write at least three paragraphs in the body. You should provide at least one paragraph for each idea you mentioned in the introduction. These paragraphs should ideally contain a topic sentence and at least four sentences that thoroughly explain that topic.

    • 3

Provide a concluding paragraph that ties up any remaining details from the essay. Restate your three main ideas, using different words to reinforce those ideas. This is the one place where an emotional appeal is acceptable in an expository essay.
