How to Annotate the Sources of an Essay

Essay annotation follows two major formats: footnotes and bibliographies, each offering a summary of the sources. Some essays use both formats, with one giving a brief description of the source and the other offering a complete list of information. Annotations often feature a description of the topic in which the source describes. Through the use of annotations, the reader is able to determine the accuracy and quality of the research.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down all the information that would help the reader find the information you have used in your text. If you cited a magazine or newspaper, include the date, page number, article title and the name of the periodical.

    • 2

Write down, if you are referencing a book, the title, author, city of publication, publishing company and the copyright date. This information can help the reader track down the source in a library.

    • 3

Write a small number beside the information you intend to annotate. At the bottom of the same page, write the corresponding number followed by the annotation. The first should be numbered "1," and so on. This is called a footnote.

    • 4

Write the information at the back of the text as an alternative to writing the information at the bottom. This is a common feature because many of the sources can have a long description. This is called a bibliography.

    • 5

Write a short description about what the book is about when annotating a book source. This is most-commonly used when referencing in a bibliography format.
