Brainstorm the summary. Ask yourself a series of questions before you begin the writing process. Are you going to write about a number of famous speeches or are you going to discuss rhetorical style of modern politics? Are you going to place the famous speeches within the context of the summary of American English rhetorical styles? Limit yourself to what you really want to summarize in this step and use a scratch sheet of paper to organize your thoughts.
Write an introduction on the topic of American English rhetoric. This introduction should key the reader into the scope of your topic. For example, you may be focusing on American English rhetoric in the political campaigns of 2006. Briefly state your intentions. For instance: "The 2006 election cycle in the United States is an illustration of a very specific style of rhetoric." Use this first paragraph to set the stage for your upcoming summation of various speeches or styles.
Write body paragraphs which follow up on your stated intentions in the first paragraph. Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the specific element of rhetoric you will be summarizing. Each paragraph should be limited to one topic. When summarizing American English rhetoric, think about how you would like to break up the topics. For example, you could summarize the rhetoric of different action groups, with each group getting a paragraph or two. Or you might summarize the various tactics of American rhetoric used in politics as a whole. For instance:
"Tapping the emotions of the listening audience has been commonly used over the last few years to grab the attention of various voting groups."
This sentence introduces the concept of emotional speaking to the reader. After the initial sentence, continue to include a summary of this tactic and use specific examples to complete the summary.
Write a conclusion that briefly recaps the summary you presented. This conclusion should remain brief and should allow the reading audience to know that your summary is closing. For example:
"Over the last four years, a wide array of rhetorical styles have been used in America, including the classic styles of emotion, reason and reputation."
