Activities for ESOL Classes

English as a Second Language teaching is in great demand because of the many students around the world who wish to learn English. English as a Second Language (ESOL) students range in age from kindergarten through to senior citizens. Activities for ESOL classes should be age appropriate and useful. They should also be set depending on the goal of the lessons, either for school examinations or as a hobby.
  1. Vocabulary Activities

    • Vocabulary is an essential part of learning English. Vocabulary worksheets can be given to support role play or other ESOL activities in the classroom such as listening to tapes and grammar practice. For beginner students, pictures with the vocabulary words printed next to them are often helpful to use as prompts for discussions and for writing exercises.

    Grammar Activities

    • Grammar is the cornerstone of learning language, but it's particularly important for all activities for ESOL students interested in obtaining certification in the English language. Written worksheets, practice drills both on paper and in spoken form, and writing activities such as stories, plays and short essays can help student improve their grammar and ESOL skills.

    Speaking Activities

    • Speaking a foreign language can be very enjoyable but also very challenging, especially for beginners and for shy students. Basic conversational fluency in English is useful for all levels and age groups. Key speaking activities such as discussion and role play will include such topics as making introductions, talking about oneself, discussing the weather and making future plans. Activities that help them become proficient in situational English such as at the bank or in the supermarket are also useful and interesting activities for all levels of ESOL student.

    Listening Activities

    • ESOL activities that involve listening include role play, pair or group discussion and whole class activities. Pronunciation drills will also help ESOL students express themselves more clearly. Listening to the news or radio will also help students improve their understanding and fluency. Podcasts and webinars can also help students learn at home.

    Reading Activities

    • Reading short stories or articles in English, particularly from a newspaper, can help ESOL students learn more about how English is used by native speakers. Reading also helps improve vocabulary, and reading aloud can help with pronunciation.

    Writing Activities

    • ESOL students who wish to receive a qualification in English will be required to show evidence of written English skills. There are a number of examinations that students can prepare for and teachers should provide practice for the curriculum being studied.

    Games and Other Informal Activities

    • English language games are useful for all levels of student and for all types of learner, from the serious student of English to people learning it for a few weeks while on vacation. Quizzes, crossword puzzles, word searches and matching the word to the picture or filling in the blanks games are all suitable activities for students of any age.
