How to Teach Farsi as a Second Language

Also referred to as Persian, Farsi is a language that is primarily spoken in Iran and Afghanistan. In recent years, the number of people speaking and learning Farsi in other parts of the world is increasing steadily. Some learn Farsi for fun, some for work and others just to be able to explore and understand Middle Eastern culture. Teaching Farsi as a second language can be challenging as it uses an alphabet that is different from the one used by most Western languages. Additionally, unlike English for example, Farsi reads from right to left.

Put together a detailed lesson plan for your students. The lesson plan will describe how the students will learn Farsi throughout the duration of the course, including the different methods you intend to use. Also, include a list of all materials the students will need to learn the language. Those materials can be Farsi textbooks, Farsi-English dictionary, CDs, videos, and others. These materials will introduce Farsi to students and allow them to learn and understand the basic grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

    • 2

Introduce the Farsi alphabet to students. Make charts and tables that explain the rules for each letter. The Farsi alphabet, also known as Alefba, contains 32 letters. The rules allow students to learn how to write the letters and symbols of the Farsi alphabet. Make sure the students memorize and practice the writing and pronunciation of each letter. Also, introduce common phrases that are used regularly, such as greetings, asking for help and direction, simple requests and more.

    • 3

Use audios and videos of native speakers to allow students to hear and understand how to pronounce each Farsi word. Also encourage students to imitate what they hear and memorize the different phrases and sentences people use. They should repeat phrases and expressions such as "salam!" (hi!), "bedrood" (goodbye), or mamnoon (thank you), and use them when practicing conversation with classmates.

    • 4

Have students make flash cards of every new word or phrase you introduce in each lesson. Ask them to write the Farsi words or phrases on one side of the flashcard and the English translation on the other side. Also have the students make flashcards of helpful words they find in their home assignments.

    • 5

Allow students to practice what they have learned with each other in the classroom. Encourage them to also practice at home and use any free time they have to memorize Farsi words and master their pronunciation by repeating those words several time a day. This practice will help students expand their vocabulary and become more comfortable speaking Farsi.

    • 6

Test the students at the end of each Farsi lesson, with a final exam at the end of the course. The test should evaluate their speaking and writing abilities. This evaluation will also help you determine the progress made by each student and allow you to adjust your teaching strategy, if necessary.
