Get a head start in your freshman year. Talk with your guidance counselor about any concerns you may have regarding your core classes, which are your chosen course work. For instance, if you have been assigned AP (Advanced Placement) classes and you feel you have too many, discuss this with your guidance counselor. You may need to adjust your schedule.
In the same token, if your schedule permits, get a head start by taking on extra course work. Talk with teachers regarding online courses or high school classes offered at your local community college.
Find a tutor if you are having difficulties in a class. Do not wait until mid-semester. Waiting will set you back further. Find an appropriate tutor with the help of your guidance counselor as soon as you receive one or two bad grades in a particular course.
Keep extracurricular activities on the back burner if you have trouble in classes. Concentrate on raising grades. Find a balance between a part-time job and school. If you fall behind in school, you may need to either quit the job or take an extended break.
Be proactive and keep your grades up. Speak with teachers about extra credit if your grades drop. By your senior year, there should be no surprises that require you to scramble around and take extra courses in order to graduate on time.
Do not skip any classes. Skipping classes may become a habit and negatively affect your grades. Attend every scheduled class so you avoid missed assignments, tests and surprise quizzes.
Make a plan of action and stick with it. Circumstances beyond your control may arise. If so, adjust the plan so that you stay on track. This may mean taking summer courses or enrolling in an evening scholars program. Check with your guidance counselor for more information.
