English, like other languages, is not only a spoken language but one that incorporates the use of nonverbal cues like facial expressions, hand gestures and other kinds of gestures. English students can only learn these nonverbal cues in conversation with others. Once identified, they help in getting rid of the language barrier in the initial stages.
Another common technique in teaching English is through the use of applying visual aids, like flash cards and video clips. There are many benefits of visual aids. People would be able to associate a particular word easily with a picture, so language barriers do not get in the way. There is not much of a need for a common language spoken between the teacher and the students, when they use visual aids. They also help in better understanding and make the teaching process more interesting.
Some teachers divide the class into small groups where they use the visual aids and help each other to learn the language. Each individual will be able to add her own input to the learning process, which will benefit the entire group.
If the teacher speaks the languages of his students, sometimes the learning process that much simpler. In that way, the students can hear the translations of common words and phrases in their language and then the English translation. The teacher does this consistently until the students become familiar with the English words and make associations. The native language of the student is also preserved.
The teacher needs to repeat each phrase or sentence and this process will help even the weak students in the class to understand things in a better perspective. The teacher would also need to be patient while correcting errors made by the students. There is always an appropriate time to point out the mistake, and repeated corrections would make the students lose confidence in their ability to learn English easily.
Teaching English becomes easier if students can learn in a friendly and comfortable environment. Practicing the language will help in building the confidence needed to speak and write English in a fluent manner.
