Begin moving advanced students in the direction of becoming proficient students through introductory writing assessments and activities. First lessons in C1 writing can include introducing and reviewing the writing process of brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing. Provide some examples of the target writing goal. An in-class composition during the first lessons provide C1 teachers with a diagnostic assessment tool. Conference with the language learner regarding the strengths of the composition and the areas for improvement in grammar, vocabulary, organization and development. Include an exercise in composing tactful email communications.
The first lessons of C1 level reading can include a review activity from B2. Familiarity with material provides a solid base for moving into more challenging vocabulary and reading tasks. Working with balance sheets plunges language learners into a reading task consisting of objective criteria in the form of numbers, along with critical thinking skills incorporated in editing and analysis. Discussions range from summarizing the reading, checking the statistics with a partner or group, to data analysis such as noting trends and company viability.
Establish a speech community in the classroom in the first lessons of C1 Speaking, Listening and Conversation exercises through the topic of advertisements. Review vocabulary and background information regarding the design and psychology behind advertisements. In pairs or groups, language learners study the specific vocabulary and human needs that advertisers use to sell their products. Discuss selected advertisements regarding whether the ad is effective. Language learners can give presentations on their findings and share opinions, ask clarifying questions, politely disagree, and keep up a conversation in an academic and business atmosphere.
Add breadth and depth to the language learner experience through research projects. Begin the first lessons with a common topic, such as leadership styles. Language learners can research the topic at area libraries and online, including material about someone they see as being a leader. During the first seminar lesson, learners share their initial research, discuss the aspects of various on-site and online sources and share their leadership ideals. Enhance first lessons through sight, sound and music by presenting selections from films for additional discussion. Well-known films such as "Harry Potter," "Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" all address issues of leadership.
