Goals in Learning the English Language

While the world does not share one common language, English reaches into virtually every corner of the globe. According to "Language And Culture: An Introduction To Human Communication," an online resource created by Dr. Dennis O'Neil, professor of anthropology at Palomar College, it is an official language in 52 countries and approximately one-third to one-fourth of people in the world understand and speak English to some degree. There are myriad goals for learning this language.
  1. Self-Development

    • For some people, learning the English language is purely a means of self-development; they may enjoy a challenge and want to push their mental capabilities further. Learning a new language is a tough task and when mastered, will give the person a sense of accomplishment, as well as enhance his cognitive processes and equip him with useful learning methods that may help him in his other educational endeavors.

    Career Opportunities

    • A large part of international business is conducted in English, so speaking this language can help people become qualified to receive job promotions or gain employment overseas. The ability to speak English is a valuable asset to employers, particularly those in export who need local employees to communicate -- and close business deals -- with United States-based companies.

    Culture Appreciation

    • Many seek to learn English to further their interest in the culture. Hollywood movies produced in English are distributed throughout the world and are enjoyed by people from a variety of cultures. Though subtitles are available to enable viewing by international audiences, some find it a much richer experience to be able to understand the film in its native language rather than through translation.

    Religious Observance

    • A person may choose to learn English for religious reasons. Just as Hebrew is a part of the Jewish religion, or Arabic for Muslims, English is for Christians. Though translations of the Christian Bible are available in a range of foreign languages, there are times when meanings may become lost in translation and some people may feel they gain a better understanding of the Bible by learning to read and observe it in its original context.
