How to Stop Nuisance Mail

Junk mail can range from simply annoying to inviting identity theft. Stopping this mail is not as easy as stopping telemarketing phone calls since there is not a national "Do Not Mail" list that you can opt-in to. However, there are steps you can take to prevent companies from mailing you information you neither need nor want. These steps will reduce the amount of mail you throw away without a second glance, and reduce the burden on our landfills and recycling centers at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop pre-approved credit card and insurance offers from coming to your door by opting out of receiving them. You can do this by calling the opt-out number on the offer, or by going to optoutprescreen.com. If you choose to call, you will need to do so from your home phone.

    • 2

Remove your name from the mailing lists of so-called text brokers, who obtain your information from public sources and then sell the lists. In order to be removed from these lists you will need to write to each company individually.

    • 3

Remove your information from the Direct Marketing Association. The DMA provides lists to all types of marketers. You can remove your name from their list by visiting dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailing. Due to the time it takes for its members to update their lists, it may take six months for these mailings to cease.
