How to Organize Outlining Principles

Outlines support the basic premise of the thesis of a written project. Outlines generally include an introduction, body and conclusion as the main thematic sections of the project. In general, outlining principles encourage the logical flow of the paper content. They recommend the use of parallel grammatical structures at each level of an outline, with at least two subdivisions for each category. They suggest limiting the number of main categories and explain when to use formal or informal outlines. Organizing these concepts will vary depending on whether the principles refer to one or more types of papers.

Instructions

  1. Organizing Outlining Principles

    • 1

Select the categories of written projects that you will be covering in your outlining principles. Different types of papers require different types of outlines. The goal of argumentative papers is to change the way your audience thinks about a subject or convince them to take an action they might not be inclined to take. The goal of a research paper is to investigate an assigned question to find answers to that question, draw conclusions from research and support them with documented evidence. Specific outlining principles will relate to each type of paper written, so the first thing to do is decide which type of paper you will be giving the outlining principles for.

    • 2

Develop the outlining principles that relate to your chosen categories. In the main body of your text for each category, include suggestions for writing each type of outline. Suggest subject headings pertinent to the type of paper being outlined. For an argumentative paper, you might list possible headings of the "Benefits" of the choice, or for a research paper, "History" of the topic. Specify the appropriate voice to use, and the advantages and disadvantages of using complete sentences or phrases for headings. Within each outlining category present the steps that need to be logically followed. The planning and drafting of subject headings, deciding on premises to cover, and the chronological and logical flow of ideas should be addressed.

    • 3

Write an introduction that explains the types of outlining you will cover and how you will present the outlining principles for each category of paper. Organize the categories alphabetically and present the supporting outlining principles under each category. At the end of the main body of text, add conclusions that summarize the basic outlining principles. Place recommendations for further reference material and helpful resources at the bottom of the outlining principle report.
