Gather your references and various notes you have collected throughout your research process. You should have already read each note/reference thoroughly and know how it fits into your research topic. The outline needs to be complete by this time as well. Now you are ready to put together the binder.

    • 2

Develop a "to-do" list in the beginning of your notebook. This list will aid you in staying organized while you write the research paper by dissecting the lengthy paper into smaller blocks of time and task to manage. For example: locating titles, take notes on "XYZ" book, read "XYZ" book." Include a calendar of deadlines and important dates that pertain to the research paper.

    • 3

Create a section in the binder titled "Related Material." Keep interviews, important phone numbers, email or correspondence and other miscellaneous, useful information here.

    • 4

Keep a running bibliography as the paper progresses. This will keep your references in order as your continue to write the paper. This will be the next section in the notebook binder.

    • 5

Sort through all notes and put them in order alphabetically by author. Place them in the binder in a section labeled "Notes." Last name of the author, year the article was written and page number should be on every note.

    • 6

Integrate your notes and references into the outline you already wrote. Start at the beginning of the "Notes" section of your binder and insert the reference into the appropriate section of the outline (last name of author, date and page). This will help ensure you have enough reference material and be a guide for you to find topic information when you begin writing the paper.
