GED Alternative Schools

General Educational Development schools give individuals who did not complete high school the chance to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. The majority of GED schools concentrate on five subjects -- reading, writing, math, social studies and science. Common locations for GED schools include public high schools, community colleges and community centers.
  1. Online Preparation

    • While the official GED test cannot be taken online, people may enroll and participate in GED preparation schools over the Internet. Preparation classes are not a requirement for the GED test; however, they do assist people in reviewing test material, studying and taking practice tests. Online GED schools, typically charge per course and are self-paced. Price depends upon school and the number of courses taken.

    Career Training Schools

    • Some schools teach vocational skills, such as English as a Second Language and specific career training, along with reading, writing, math, social studies and science. These schools are typically referred to as vocational or technical schools. In addition attending GED preparation courses, students can also attend classes related to a specific occupation, such as welding, data entry or information technology.

    Schools for Parents

    • Some GED schools in metropolitan areas, such as New York City, cater to parents with small children by offering for students while they attend preparation classes. Students younger than 21 may attend traditional high school classes in GED subject matters only, making a shorter day that still allows time for caring for a young child or working part time.

    People Younger Than 21

    • Young people who have a criminal record or substance abuse problems may attend alternative GED schools that offer evening classes, residential programs and social services. Schools that cater to substance abusers treat the underlying issues of substance abuse while preparing the students for the GED exam. Schools for students with criminal records work on rehabilitating and reintroducing the students to society as they earn a GED.
