While the official GED test cannot be taken online, people may enroll and participate in GED preparation schools over the Internet. Preparation classes are not a requirement for the GED test; however, they do assist people in reviewing test material, studying and taking practice tests. Online GED schools, typically charge per course and are self-paced. Price depends upon school and the number of courses taken.
Some schools teach vocational skills, such as English as a Second Language and specific career training, along with reading, writing, math, social studies and science. These schools are typically referred to as vocational or technical schools. In addition attending GED preparation courses, students can also attend classes related to a specific occupation, such as welding, data entry or information technology.
Some GED schools in metropolitan areas, such as New York City, cater to parents with small children by offering for students while they attend preparation classes. Students younger than 21 may attend traditional high school classes in GED subject matters only, making a shorter day that still allows time for caring for a young child or working part time.
Young people who have a criminal record or substance abuse problems may attend alternative GED schools that offer evening classes, residential programs and social services. Schools that cater to substance abusers treat the underlying issues of substance abuse while preparing the students for the GED exam. Schools for students with criminal records work on rehabilitating and reintroducing the students to society as they earn a GED.
