Ideas for Teaching Talents

Talent is a creative, often natural, ability to do something well. This might be the ability to write, sing, draw or play sports -- anything someone has the basic skills to do. Although many people appear to be born with a particular talent, talents can also be acquired, taught and developed with instruction and practice.
  1. Talent Identification

    • Identifying a talent is the key to development. You may notice a child who begins singing at a young age or who has an interest in musical instruments. This could be a sign there is a natural talent for -- or at least a strong interest in -- music. The same holds true for someone who likes to doodle and creates relatively good drawings without taking art classes. Once you've identified a natural talent, you can begin developing and teaching the talent.

    Talent Versus Creativity

    • Although the two often go together, there is a difference between talent and creativity. While you can teach or help develop someone's talent, you may not be able to teach someone how to use the talent creatively. You can teach someone to read and write music or play an instrument (talent), but you may not be able to teach that same person how to come up with ideas for songs (creativity).

    Talent Immersion

    • Deep immersion can help teach a talent. Students who engage in activities relating to the talent they want to learn absorb the talent. If you're teaching how to play an instrument, encourage students to listen to music and study what they hear. Encourage students to attend concerts and read as much about the subject as possible. The learning process involves taking information and influences and processing those things until something comes out that belongs to the student.

    Reiteration

    • The saying "practice makes perfect" is accurate. Repetition is key to developing talent. Simply assigning your students material to study isn't enough. Engage students in real-world challenges involving whatever talent you want to teach or help develop. Reiterating, or repeating, those skills necessary to the talent is the best way to teach.
