Get a copy of the standard from the EMS registrar of your choice. Read and understand all the procedures you need to fulfill to successfully implement an EMS. (See Reference 2)
Design tasks towards implementing your EMS procedures and assign the competent personnel to fulfill the duties. Derive your strategies from the procedures spelled out in the standard purchased. Carefully evaluate the guidelines set by the standard and choose leaders with the capability to effectively accomplish these actions. Choose a specific person to be in charge of a specific assignment to ensure responsibility. If the policy requires cutting down on power consumption by computers, assign the information and communication technologies department head to be in charge. (See References 2, 3)
Develop a system for task leaders to report progress and keep record. A reporting system ensures that all progress is discussed, tracked down and all necessary changes required are effected. Arrange for a record keeping system to provide a referral system for procedures that may not be easily visible. Clearly define the mode of documentation and filing system to ensure unity in the team and progress. (See Reference 2)
Train and continually update your employees on the environmental policy. Ensure that all members of staff understand basic details about the policy and its implementation procedures. Provide further training to specific task leaders to provide the continuous coaching to their team members guaranteeing the conclusion of the task. Assess your staff continually to gauge if the training offered is successful in the overall achievement of the environmental policy. (See References 2, 3)
Create an accountability strategy. Organize responsible employees into groups according to the tasks; charge each team with a leader who takes the overall responsibility. Accountability ensures completion of assigned tasks as there is one staff member, a team leader, answerable to the management. The team leader must be well conversant with the policy requirements, completely dedicated to the tasks and have the ability to encourage his or her team to perform. (See References 2, 3)
Conduct appraisal on the implementation process. Measure the implementation process against the set environmental implementation standard. Assess the performance of each task against the set standards required to register for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001. Evaluate the process objectively and effect any changes needed to register your EMS as required by the set environmental standards. (See References 1, 2)
