What Do the Colored Tags Mean During a Disaster?

Health care resources become very limited when a disaster strikes. The triage colored tag system is designed to help distribute these limited resources effectively and efficiently among all individuals affected by the disaster. It prioritizes health care services and ensures the maximum survival rate among all parties involved. It also gives health care providers a snapshot of what supplies are most needed from outside help.
  1. Black Tags

    • These indicate that death has occurred or that the severity of injury will cause death within minutes. Medical services administered are usually limited to pain medication and other methods of making the individual as comfortable as possible prior to death occurring.

    Red Tags

    • These denote life-threatening injuries that require immediate attention to increase the survival rate of the individual. These individuals usually receive the quickest response and medical attention to help stabilize them until they can be transported for proper medical care. They receive priority for transportation away from the disaster area.

    Yellow Tags

    • These describe an individual as having injuries that are not life threatening and that can wait for medical attention. Pain medication and fluids are provided to these individuals to help bring them to ease until they receive the proper medical attention that they need for their moderate to serious injuries.

    Green Tags

    • These individuals have received minor injuries that do not require any immediate attention. Broken skin, cuts and wounds are cleaned and sanitized to avoid infection, but additional treatment is generally limited as these resources are used for those in more immediate medical danger.
