What Do the ASVAB Scores Mean?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test is used to measure military eligibility and career aptitude. The military uses this ASVAB test to determine whether a student can enter the military and which military career might suit him best. Students can use this test as a measure of their career skills in a variety of fields.
  1. Passing and Failing

    • There is no "passing" score on the ASVAB. It is simply a measure of the careers that might suit someone in the military. However, to enlist in the military a student has to earn at least a score of 31.

    Career Exploration Scores

    • The career exploration scores are one set of composite scores derived from a student's answers on the ASVAB. These scores measure a student's understanding of math, verbal linguistics and science as compared to a national standard.

    Military Careers Score

    • The military careers score helps a student compare his performance on the test and his aptitude for certain skills against new enlistees in a variety of military careers. This might point him in the direction of a military career that would utilize his skills and talents.

    Military Entrance Score

    • This score is also known as the Armed Forces Qualification Test score (AFQT). It determines a person's eligibility to enlist in the military.

    Selecting a Military Career

    • The higher an ASVAB score, the more military careers a potential recruit can qualify for and select. The ASVAB scores help recruiters determine appropriate careers for recruits and align those recruits with the military careers that are right for them.
