Earth Day Activities in Riverside, California

Riverside California, one hour's drive east of Los Angeles, hosts a variety of Earth Day events in conjunction with the Earth Day network. These events provide opportunities for residents and visitors to demonstrate their commitment to the environment while learning about strategies to demonstrate environmental responsibility. Earth Day activities aim to educate the public, direct public policy and motivate the community to support environmental activism.
  1. Riverside Transit Authority

    • The Riverside Transit Authority (riversidetransit.com) invites Riverside residents who rode a RTA bus on Earth Day or during the week of Earth Day to enter a drawing for a free bus pass. Bus riders should send their day pass, week pass or monthly pass that proves that they rode a RTA bus during that period to: Attention Earth Day Contest, Riverside Transit Authority, P.O. Box 59968, Riverside, CA 92517-1968. The RTA must receive the passes by May 27th for entry into the drawing. The RTA reminds Riverside residents that riding a bus contributes to efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and smog-forming pollutants. Public transit generates almost 50 percent less nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide per passenger mile than private vehicles.

    University of California at Riverside

    • The University of California at Riverside (ucr.edu) participates in Earth Day through campus-based activities. The Office of Undergraduate Research in the Community sponsors a free breakfast. The breakfast features organic and local food and showcases opportunities for community service, specifically opportunities which pertain to sustainability and the environment. The university offers students the option to trade a plastic water bottle for a pen produced with the plastic of recycled bottles. Students may also view the solar box oven, which the university's dining services uses to produce carbon-free food options.

    E-Waste Collection

    • All Green Electronics (allgreenrecycling.com) provides free e-waste Riverside collection sites in honor of Earth Day. Riverside residents may drop off unwanted electronics at any of the three Riverside collection points: St. George's Episcopal Church at 1825 Service Court, AllSafe Freeway Self Storage at 1807 Columbia Ave or the Country Club Self Storage at 749 N. Main St. All Green Electronics assures the public that it recycles everything that they accept from the collection points and does not allow any items to end up in a landfill or overseas.

    Chino Earth Day Celebraton

    • The City of Chino (cityofchino.org), 30 minutes west of Riverside, together with the Inland Empire Utilities Agency and the Santa Ana Watershed Association, hosts an Earth Day celebration at the Chino Creek Wetlands and Educational Park located on Kimball Avenue in Chino. The celebration includes performances by local schools, environmental exhibits, interactive activities and a musical performance.
