Determine the cause of a student's problems by watching out for reading problems, difficulties with focus and organization, speech problems and issues with memory. Tell the parents about any social and emotional development problems so the student can be sent for a psychiatric evaluation if necessary.
Identify specialist support staff such as counselors, occupational therapists and behavioral therapists who can be of help. Ask the school administration to provide children with access to these specialists. Develop a structured lesson plan that the student can follow while working with the specialist.
Use technologies such as online video presentations, interactive quizzes, online learning games and different types of software to help special needs students with learning different subjects.
Use frequent academic assessments to determine whether the student is improving. Adapt teaching strategies based on the results of these assessments.
Identify obstacles that may be preventing the student from progressing and develop new strategies based on surmounting these obstacles. As an example, if the student is unable to read at her grade level, provide her with extra tutoring. Encourage students every time you notice an improvement so their self-esteem flourishes and they are motivated to continue working.
