There are many approaches to learning the fundamentals of a foreign language, including courses given at colleges, community centers, and churches. For those who prefer a more private learning environment, online classes or home-study courses are available as well courses presented on CDs and DVDs. And don't forget that there are books and tapes available at most public libraries.
There may be new and fun ways to learn foreign language vocabulary words, but reading remains the best approach to learning new words. Find a novel or magazine printed in the language of your choice. Try to determine the translation of unfamiliar words by using the context for clues. Use a translational dictionary to see if you got it right.
Keep a small translational dictionary in your purse or backpack. When you have spare moments, look for words for your favorite foods or hobbies. Most dictionaries include examples of how to use these words in sentences. When circumstances permit, try saying the words and reading the sentences aloud.
When you learn the word for computer, for example, also learn the words for related items like laptop, printer and key board.. Also, try using your new words in sentences related to their meaning.
One of the easiest ways for many people to learn is through hand/eye coordination. Take a short list of words; write the new word in the left column in your first language, then write the foreign word in the right column. Make it fun -- try writing your words in fancy scroll or maybe using festive colors. Write the list several times, for most people this is a good way to commit these words to memory.
When you find a new word say it aloud. Hola -- the Spanish for Hello -- rhymes with cola. So, say aloud, "hola, cola!" Try doing this with words that give you the trouble. Make it a sing-song if that seems catchy or makes it silly enough to be amusing.
Make the process fun. There are hundreds of online games that teach foreign language vocabulary. Try several until you find one that intrigues you. If you enjoy yourself, you will then have hours of entertainment -- and education.
