How to Teach Yourself the C Flute

The C flute is a wonderful instrument and can be a pleasure to learn and play, but it can be hard to find classes, particularly for adults who are far beyond high school band practices and who have limited schedules. Instead of crossing your fingers and calling the nearest music store, try teaching yourself, instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a beginner's flute book like the First Division Band Method book by Fred Weber (buy in person rather than online to be sure that you get the C Flute version of the book). Look for a fingering guide and the scales to help you learn.

    • 2

Practice making noise with the mouth piece. You should blow across the hole similarly to the way that you make a soda bottle hum. Pursing your lips loosely makes a low tone. Pursing them tight and blowing sharply and slightly in makes a higher tone. You should practice until you can make both sounds easily.

    • 3

Use the fingering chart in your book to practice the scales. Practice making the correct sounds, and moving smoothly from fingering to fingering. Once you have it down, try it in reverse.

    • 4

Move to the first song in your song book, which should be very simple and recognizable. Mary Had a Little Lamb is a good example of a first song for the flute.

    • 5

Go back to the fingerings as often as needed to learn the song. Make sure that you can play it well before you move on to the next song.
