Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local library and ask to see their ESL resource section. Some libraries even have a special learning center where free speaking classes are offered.

    • 2

Make flashcards on index cards of new words or grammar concepts you need to remember. Do this to practice concepts you've already learned or go through books and copy information to memorize. Keep the info on each card short and to the point, and take the cards along with you wherever you go so you can look them over while riding the bus or waiting at the doctor's office.

    • 3

Practice every chance you get. Read cereal boxes and traffic signs. Have short conversations with the bus driver or the cashier at the corner grocery store. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Surrounding yourself with English will encourage you to think in English and make it easier to memorize things.

    • 4

Watch films, listen to the radio, audiobooks and CDs in English. Speak on the phone in English if you have a chance, or try singing your favorite English-language song. Lyrics can often be found online, so you can practice pronunciation and reading as well.

    • 5

Test yourself often. Not only will this allow you to know where you are in terms of language, but also help you see if you're making progress. Many sites like WorldEnglish offer free tests that you can retake as often as you'd like to measure improvements.

Play games in English. If you have somebody to practice with, do so, or use online games sites such as ToLearnEnglish, where you can play hangman, crosswords, word searches and matching games. Games are interactive, organized by level and created especially for ESL learners, so you will be able to use them for learning no matter your current level.
