Decide what type of painting you would like to do. You may choose to paint with watercolors, or use oil-based or acrylic paints. Consider what subjects you want to paint, such as landscapes, portraits or natural objects.
Take a painting class. Try a local art school or an inexpensive community education class. Some of the larger art supply stores hold painting classes. Choose a class that allows a lot of one-on-one time with an experienced painting instructor.
Practice your painting. Experiment with different types of paints and textures of paper. Over time, you will develop a personal style.
Access free painting tutorials and articles online (see Resources). Learn how to use different types of paint, the basics of color theory and how to frame or preserve your paintings so they will last a lifetime. Some websites are geared specifically towards watercolor painting.
