Ways of Remembering Things

Sometimes difficulty remembering things comes with age, but that is not always the case. If you analyze the situation, you may find other causes. Ways in which you can help yourself remember things do exist. The strategy you need to improve your memory will require your full attention, but then, a lack of it could be part of the problem.
  1. Pay Attention

    • With all of the responsibilities that come with life, you may find it almost impossible to clear your mind for even a moment, but if you need space in your head for some important information, you must create that space. When you are thinking about the list of things you have to accomplish for the day, you aren't focusing on the information you need to retain. Clear your head and give your undivided attention to whatever it is you need to remember, and try to avoid any distractions that may come up.

    Say It Many Times

    • One important key to remembering things is repetition. Just thinking about something for a moment won't help it stay in your mind. What you need to do is say the information out loud many times. This technique has been known to be of some help when trying to remember something.

    Place It Where You Can't Miss It

    • It's very easy to leave something behind when you leave the house, but if this happens, it can cause a lot of inconvenience on your part when you have to return home to get what it was you forgot. To minimize the chance of this happening, you should place the item where you won't be able to miss it. If the item is an envelope, for instance, put it in your purse so it sticks out the top of your bag and you can see it. Remove it when you grab your purse and hold the envelope in your hand until you get into your car or to a mailbox.

    Associate The Information

    • When you hear or see information or a face you need to remember, try to connect it to something that will remind you of it. For example, if you meet someone new, associate that person with a celebrity who has the same name or a similar name.

    Space Out Learning Sessions

    • You will be better able to remember what you learn if you space out your learning sessions when taking a course or studying a particular subject. Studying for long periods of time (3 or more hours) will only work against you. Don't overload your mind with too many facts all at once. It is best to take a break from your studies every hour or two.

    Review The Same Day

    • If you are taking a course and have studied information you must remember, read the information over repeatedly before the day ends. This technique may greatly help you remember what you just learned.
