Punjabi Learning Games

Punjabi is a language spoken in a small area of India around the Pakistani border and in areas within Pakistan. Punjabi is slightly different from most Indian languages because it is tonal, which means one word can have multiple meanings, varying with the tone of the speaker's voice. If you want to learn Punjabi, you may want to take part in learning games.
  1. Singing Games

    • There are a number of Punjabi singing games for both children and adults. These games tell a story visually while the narration is sung. These sing-along games can be purchased on DVDs. While you are watching the DVD, the words will be displayed on the screen, just as if you were partaking in karaoke. With the combination of images and words, you will soon pick up the meaning of different words in the Punjabi language.

    Flashcard Game

    • The flashcard memory game can be fun to play. It is a variation of popular flash card games played with younger children. Take a set of note cards and write out a simple Punjabi word (such as ball or dog). On another card, draw the image with the Punjabi word written small underneath. Place the word cards face down, spread out in one organized pile, and place the image cards face down in an organized pile next to the first. Flip over the Punjabi word from the first pile and try to flip over the correct image. If you correctly match the word and image, you can remove the two cards from the table. If not, flip them back over and try two other cards. Continue doing this until all cards have been matched.

    Fill in the Blank

    • Fill in the blank works just like it sounds. Have someone write out a simple sentence with one word missing. Have them make sure the word missing is obvious, such as "The____ meowed." Obviously the word is "cat." The sentence is in English, but you need to say the word in Punjabi. Try to guess the word. If you can't, have the person tell you how to say it properly and move on to the next sentence. Once you have worked all your way through the sentences, start over until you are able to answer them all correctly.
