How to Prep for a Notary Exam in New York

The New York notary exam is a one-hour multiple choice test. It covers the state notary laws as well as the terms and information related to a notary's duties. The test is given weekly at various locations across the state on a walk-in registration basis. A score of 70 percent or better is needed to pass.

Instructions

Download Notary Public License Law Pamphlet. All the information needed to pass the notary exam in New York is contained in a single publication called Notary Public License Law, which can be downloaded directly from the Department of State's website through the link in the Resources section of this article.

Study notary law. Once you have the notary law pamphlet, you should read through it thoroughly and highlight important information to help you review. A helpful technique is to briefly summarize each section of the pamphlet in your own words either in writing or aloud to someone unfamiliar with the law.

Take private training (optional). In addition to or instead of your own studying, you can also enroll in a private training course. While taking a formal course is not necessary, private training courses have high test passage rates and can answer your questions about the entire notary process and practice.
