How to Learn Hindi-to-English Conversation

Conversational English will require that you know about 3,500 words of the English language before you can adequately hold a conversation with an English speaker. (See Reference 1.) For most learners, it can take around five to seven years to become a fluent English speaker. (See Reference 2.) Take the time to speak English as much as you can, and you'll find that learning English from Hindi may take less time and effort than you had originally thought.

Learn English letters and their sounds. The English script is different than that of Hindi, so it may take some time to master the sounds and written forms of the English language. Utilize online tools such as English-as-a-second-language instructional videos found on You Tube to help you learn the letters. Search for "learn English."

Master English conversational phrases and everyday words. These include greetings and how to introduce someone, for instance. Listen to these phrases repeatedly until you have memorized them. Again, use You Tube to help you learn; search for "learn English conversation." Play selected clips over and over, and repeat out loud dialogs in the videos to help reinforce what you hear.

    • 3

Listen to English on a daily basis. Make it part of your routine. For example, listen to English in the car or on the way to work on a personal radio, iPod, or MP3 player. You can download podcasts of news in English to an iPod or MP3 player from the Internet. National Public Radio is a good site from which to download news stories.

Join an online language exchange such as My Language Exchange. You will meet regularly with an English speaker who wants to learn Hindi from you. Bring questions you have about what you have been hearing in English to your conversation partner. Speaking in English with a conversation partner will help you improve your conversational skills and learn new idioms and figures of speech that are common in English.

Attend English-as-a-second-language classes at your local adult or community education center. Some religious organizations also offer English classes. You will build your vocabulary and knowledge of grammar in these classes. If you prefer, you can hire a private English tutor in your community, or hire one to give you specialized English classes over the Internet. Try ESL Teachers Board or Buddy School to find English tutors online.
