Distance Learning Courses in Construction

Whether you're trying to break into the construction industry as a new career path or just want to educate yourself to be able to work on your own home, completing educational coursework in construction can give you a strong "foundation." If you prefer to learn from home, the process of distance learning, where students complete classes either over the Internet or on prerecorded DVDs, CD-ROMs or videos, may be a good fit. A variety of options are available, from single topics in the construction industry or entire programs to earn a construction degree.
  1. Turner Construction Company

    • The Turner Construction Company offers a la carte (no school or program to enroll in) courses for the construction industry. You complete each course at home and on a self-paced basis over the Internet. (You'll need a high-speed Internet connection.) Classes include cavity walls, which includes the difference between structural stud and masonry backup, pre- and post-construction issues in cavity walls, plus the components of backup wall systems; windows and glass, which teaches the differences between window types and framing components, sealants, insulation, acoustic properties and installation issues; plus foundations and moisture control, which gives students the ability to identify common foundation problems, subsurface conditions and moisture intrusion. The school also offers broader managerial topics, such as harassment-avoidance training. Courses range from one to three hours each; the school does not require any educational or construction experience to complete a course.
