How do I Learn Auslan Online?

Differences between the northern and southern regional dialects of Auslan, or Australian sign language, abound. According to Babies and Sign Language, native deaf speakers of both dialects in Australia may not even understand each other at times. Teach yourself Auslan by taking advantage of the many resources available online. Many resources are free, so you can learn Auslan without spending money to do so.

      Begin learning the Auslan alphabet, which uses both hands to form all of the letters. Find several videos that demonstrate how to form the Auslan alphabet on YouTube. Search for "Auslan alphabet."

      Learn simple signs for everyday needs and objects. Visit Sign Planet for resources for beginner Auslan learners. The site includes resources for parents teaching their babies Auslan to help them communicate before they speak.

      Build your vocabulary by learning Auslan signs from the Auslan dictionary on the Auslan website. Use videos to help you learn new words. Replay the videos to help you remember signs as you learn them. The site has pages that are currently under construction as of August 2010.
