How to Learn Lean Manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is a methodology that encourages you to think outside of the box. Lean relates to production practices and seeks to minimize non-value added steps to reduce inventory requirements, cost and lead time. Learning lean manufacturing can save money by identifying problems that effect your bottom line. Taking a systematic approach to continuously identifying and reducing or eliminating waste in your production system are what the tools of lean manufacturing are based on.

Lean manufacturing is a team effort.

Review the requirements of lean manufacturing. There are on line sites that can walk you through the techniques. However, lean is not an individual function. Everyone on your team has to understand the change that is about to take place in your business structure. Lean production techniques teach that the change should first start with management. Once the management team has an understanding of the process, it will be easy for your production team to follow. The process begins with training and never stops (see Reference 2).

Get industry certified. It has the potential to increase your salary.

Seek an accredited program. You can train yourself in the basic structure of lean manufacturing, but you will need to find a program that will certify you in lean manufacturing principles to get the full benefit. Certification is important because it serves as a confirmation to the industry of your proficiency. Once you receive the certification, it is also transferable and recognized by all who use the lean manufacturing process. The certifications will be under a tool called Six Sigma. Six Sigma training goes through all the lean techniques and gives you in-depth training (See Resources 1).

      Begin studying for certification belts.

Purchase the training materials. Lean manufacturing materials can be purchased from Six Sigma consulting companies, on line Six Sigma sources and local colleges. Getting formal classroom training will take you through each level of certification. The certifications are classified as belts. The four standard levels of certification are yellow belt, green belt, black belt and master black belt. (see Reference 1).

Join a team using lean manufacturing.

Research companies who practice lean manufacturing and see if they have internships or provide company tours. Major car companies, insurance companies and component manufacturing companies are a few businesses that are practicing lean manufacturing. Companies who are active in standardized practices are the best teaching tool because you can see the process in action. The lean terms and the processes are used in daily functions. Participating in the process will help you learn and understand lean manufacturing.
