Watch Spanish programs on your computer or television. Some of these are designed specifically to teach Spanish to non-Spanish speakers, and they will place special emphasis on repeating key words and phrases. Other programs are designed for native Spanish speakers, so there will not be any kind of explanation of the words you hear. If you are just starting out, try watching programs designed for Spanish-speaking children as these are simple, educational and entertaining. You should also try turning the subtitles on with your TV remote so you can see the actual Spanish words being spoken; this way, you'll be able to better absorb what you are hearing.
Read Spanish books, magazines or newspapers. You can get these from your local library. Try children's books to start, as these are much easier for beginners to understand. Use a Spanish-English dictionary as needed.
Practice using the words and phrases you learned watching Spanish programming or reading Spanish books, while you go about your daily chores around the home. For instance, if you watched a cooking show, you might try saying the words you learned aloud while gathering your ingredients to cook dinner. In general, try to think of the Spanish words for various objects around your house as you go about your daily routine.
Once you get comfortable using different Spanish words and phrases on your own, try practicing with family members, neighbors or friends who speak some Spanish. Start with simple conversation and work your way up to more complicated topics of discussion. Practicing with someone else who already speaks some Spanish should help you learn new things, as well as reinforce what you've learned on your own.
Organize a Spanish family night in your home on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Encourage everyone in the family to get involved in the planning process. Try to focus on a new Spanish-speaking country every time, and plan a menu and activities that are reflective of the country you choose. Try speaking mostly in Spanish, and try out a family show-and-tell where each family member brings a new object or picture to the table and teaches everyone its Spanish name.
