How Do I Learn Norwegian in the United States?

Learning a new language is always a challenge, and Norwegian is no exception. Norwegian and English share the same alphabet, but the Norwegian alphabet has three extra characters for a total of 29. In addition, five different dialects are spoken throughout Norway. The two main variants of Norwegian are Bokmal and Nynorsk. Once you've learned either, you'll have a good grounding from which to learn similar North Germanic Scandinavian languages, including Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic.

Embark upon a self-study course. A number of interactive courses are available that will give you a good foundation in Norwegian, but they require discipline, motivation and time to complete them. Courses range from free online quickies that give you a rough guide to the basics, to more involved interactive audio books and software packages.

Study at college. There are a number of institutions throughout the United States that offer courses in Norwegian. Contact some local colleges and universities to see if Norwegian is offered.

    • 3

Find a private tutor. Search your local business directory or use a service such as Language-school-teachers.com to find a private Norwegian teacher locally. This is likely to be expensive, but it is probably the most effective method.

    • 4

Correspond with a Norwegian pen pal. Find a pen friend who's keen to exchange cultural knowledge through a service like Mylanguageexchange.com.

    • 5

Watch Norwegian media with subtitles. Watching Norwegian films or television programs with English subtitles will help you familiarize yourself with the language. Conversely, set your English DVDs to play with Norwegian text.
