How to Learn German, French & English for Free

With the federal government encouraging students to learn foreign languages, and the increased accessibility of the Internet, there are many ways to learn German, French and English for free. There are many good reasons to study German, especially if you like to travel and/or you are in the business world. French is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. English is the most global language in the world today.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local public library or a university library if you have access to one. French, German and English learning books or audio tapes are usually available. Sometimes university libraries will offer online access to Rosetta Stone, a comprehensive language learning software program with audio; and Pimsleur, an audio-only foreign-language program.

    • 2

Access The Foreign Service Institute and the BBC websites. Both sites offer interactive audio lessons for free. The BBC's lessons are quick introductions to the language, while the Foreign Service offers in-depth audio lessons.

    • 3

Watch news or television programs in German, French or English in order to be immersed in the language. Languages from Arabic to Spanish can be accessed as streaming video online. Watch television programs or movies at home with German, French or English subtitles, or watch movies in those languages and use subtitles of your native language.

    • 4

Audit university language classes in German, French or Spanish. Often, professors will allow one or two students to sit in on a classroom and sometimes even participate. Audit classes are free and without credit. Talk to the professor on the first day of class or email the professor before the semester starts to ask for permission.

    • 5

Go to ESL classes in local community centers. Many times the classes are free or funded by the government, especially in America and The United Kingdom.

    • 6

Apply for language grants to study the language abroad or in a university for free. The federal government is a great source for language grants. Try the FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) or Boren Scholarships. With expenses paid for, this experience would be cost-free.
