How to Learn Spanish & English for Kids & Adults

Learning languages is important to be able to interact with different cultures and countries. Fortunately, kids and adults can learn English and Spanish together because -- despite the age difference -- learning a language requires the same techniques. These include listening, reading, writing and speaking the language through a variety of resources. To make the experience more stimulating for the kids, cartoons or pictures can be used to teach vocabulary. However, adults will find these tools useful as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Find suitable learning material to begin learning Spanish and English. Learn the languages separately to avoid confusion between grammar and vocabulary. BBC World Service provides language tutorials for both English and Spanish, for example, or you can secure English or Spanish study guides from Rosetta Stone.

    • 2

Allocate at least two hours per week to learn each language. Break this up over a number of days so you are learning little bits of information regularly instead of in large chunks. Use time after kids finish school or during school holidays to take advantage of their time and attention.

    • 3

Learn basic parts of each language first, including the alphabet and numbers. For example, see the BBC World Service's website to listen to the Spanish alphabet and then repeat back the letters.

    • 4

Recite regular and irregular verb conjugations in order to memorize them. Work through the English and Spanish study guides and review the grammar rules so you know how to do this.

    • 5

Take turns testing each other as you progress through your learning exercises. Get the kids to write down words as you read them out loud, or get them to read from a book to practice pronunciation skills.

    • 6

Watch English learning cartoons together on the British Council's website. The colorful pictures assist in educating both kids and adults through word association.

    • 7

Play English and Spanish language games together to add an extra level of interaction to the learning sessions. For example, play bingo to practice using numbers quickly. Get one of the children to pick a number from a hat and read it, while the other kids and adults recognize the number and then mark it off a grid.

    • 8

Allow time to converse with each other. Pair up so that you can spend time discussing a particular subject matter that interests you like hobbies, school or family life.

    • 9

Use additional resources on the BBC's website to learn English and Spanish in your own time. More advanced reading and listening exercises include listening to news podcasts or reading articles.
