Review room design books and color theme books to get a sense of how professional designers create a room layout, decorate a room and optimize the room for specific living needs. Bookmark specific room designs that you like and would like to create and play with in a room design game.
Select a game that you want to play. Review room layout libraries it offers, the type of decorations and furniture that are in the libraries and its coloring capabilities. Make sure the game provides you with the decoration libraries and editing options you will need. Use a different game if the game does not meet your design needs.
Select either an entire object, such as a couch, or a group of objects, such as all the window trim, to recolor. Then select a color from the color palette. Select different colors for different room decorations, different walls and different trims. Aim for a professional designer look. Match and contrast colors so you can obtain a sense of depth and invoke a mood or feeling from your room.
Select the furniture to meet the functional needs and the aesthetic requirements for the room. Pick smaller furniture if your room is small and lighter colored furniture if your room has no windows. Use pictures of landscapes on the walls if the room is small. Place mirrors in the room if it has very little light.
Send your room design to your friends and have them send their room designs to you. Evaluate and critique each others' room designs. Use a standard evaluation form to give each room a score for your vote. Rate the functionality, aesthetics, mood, harmony and the costs of designing each room to determine the design score for a particular room. Tally up the scores for you and your friends' rooms. Select the winner based on the total number of points scored.
