Social anxiety disorder causes the patient to have an irrational fear of embarrassing themselves in front of a group of people. One of the side effects of this disorder can be excessive blushing and there are several drugs that can treat the illness. Alprazolam, Bromazepam, Triazolam are three of the drugs that are used for treatment of this disorder. These anti-anxiety medicines reduce embarrassment or unease and therefore reduce the blushing reaction to various situations.
Social phobia is a fear of going out into public and interacting with other people. This disease can lead to blushing at inopportune times and there are drugs known as adrenergic beta blockers that work by regulating and slowing down the heartbeat to treat the disorder and stop the blushing. Atenolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol are three drugs that are used to treat the underlying disorder.
One way to treat social phobias is to give the patient antidepressants. Anti-depressants don't directly affect the blushing itself, but are geared towards helping the patient feel better about himself in general. Once the social phobia is being treated properly the blushing will become more manageable and become less excessive. Antidepressants that are used to treat social phobias are Paxil, Wellbutrin and Citalopram.
Avoidant Personality Disorder is a social anxiety that can lead to excessive blushing. While no specific drugs have been found to be 100 percent effective against this disorder, serotonin reuptake inhibiters (SSRIs) as well as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) have been known to be somewhat effective against social disorders in general. An anticonvulsant drug known as Gabapentin has been shown to help those with Avoidant Personality Disorder. As with the other disorders that lead to blushing, treatment of the main disorder will also treat the blushing.
