Activities to Practice Numbers in Spanish

Learning a new language is often difficult, since each language uses different verbs and nouns to express a thought. However, learning numbers in a new language, such as Spanish, isn't as difficult as learning new words. Practice numbers in Spanish with simple and enjoyable activities that reinforce learning in Spanish. Create the activities with a friend or sibling to practice the numbers out loud with someone else.
  1. Spanish Number Flashcards

    • Create flashcards using index cards and colored markers. Write the numeric symbol for each number on the front surface of the card using one colored marker, such as blue. Then flip the cards over and write out the word for each number in Spanish, such as "uno," with another colored marker on the back of each note card. Write the English equivalent below the Spanish word for additional learning reinforcement. Place the cards in order, beginning with the number one, and study the cards every day for 15 minutes to practice the numbers in Spanish.

    Spanish Number Song

    • Practice counting in Spanish with a rhythmic song. Create a song that translates numbers from Spanish to English on a sheet of paper. The song may be as easy as "uno is one, dos is two, tres is three." Tap your feet or clap your hands while singing the song to create a rhythm. Then write the lyrics of the song on a sheet of 11-by-14 inch construction paper using markers. Hang the sheet of construction paper in a visible area of your home, such as a bedroom wall or refrigerator, allowing you to view the song and practice numbers in Spanish.

    Spanish Number Puzzle

    • Memorize numbers in Spanish with the help of a homemade puzzle. Lay a sheet of 8-by-10 inch card stock paper on a desk or table. Create three vertical wave lines down the page, 3 inches apart from one another. Then draw four horizontal wave lines across the page, 4 inches apart. The result is 12 uneven boxes. Write numbers in Spanish at the bottom of each uneven box, beginning with "uno" for one. Draw shapes, such as circles, above each word in Spanish to represent the number. Cut the uneven boxes with scissors, and then piece the puzzle together while saying the numbers in Spanish out loud.

    Spanish Number Coin Counting

    • Most kids enjoy handling coins and playing with money. Use a child's interest in money as a way to practice numbers and learn math in Spanish. Gather pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters from around the home. Plastic coins may also be used for the activity. Place the coins on a sheet of construction paper, and spread the coins out. Write the word for each value of the coin, such as "diez" for 10, below the corresponding coin in both English and Spanish. Then give each child additional coins to add together. Have each child say the equation they created with the coins aloud, such as "cinco mas uno son seis" or "five plus one is six."
