How to Learn Afrikaans by Pronunciation

Short of living in South Africa and learning the Dutch-German hybrid known as Afrikaans the natural way, you can use free lessons and software online to learn the language. In addition, listen to native speakers talk as much as possible. If you don't have access to Afrikaaners, there are plenty of opportunities available on the Internet to listen to people speaking Afrikaans. The more listening you do, the better your pronunciation will be in the long run.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the African Languages Online Tutor website. Read the section called "How to Start" under the "General" tab on the far left side of the menu bar. Click on the "Pronunciation" tab in the menu bar. Click on "Specific Focus" and begin listening to the first lesson on the alphabet. Listen two or three times before you try to pronounce the sounds.

    • 2

Move through the next pronunciation lessons in the "Specific Focus" category, always listening two or three times before you try to speak. Do the "Holistic Focus" lessons, which are also located under the "Pronunciation" tab.

    • 3

Read some Afrikaans text out loud to a native Afrikaans speaker. The owner of the African Languages Online Tutor website has a standing offer to call anyone in North America via phone or Skype, if you don't know any native speakers.

    • 4

Click on the "Vocabulary" tab in the menu bar. Begin to slowly work through each of the lessons. The author of the site wrote a Windows software program to help learners practice the vocabulary. Contact him at the email address on the website.

    • 5

Work through the "Grammar" section of the site and continue reviewing what you have learned to say so far. Speak Afrikaans to whomever will listen to you. Record yourself speaking and then listen to the tape. See how closely your pronunciation resembles native speakers. Continue to practice speaking.

    • 6

Listen to Afrikaans radio shows, such as Boervolkradio.co.za. Try to get as much exposure to the language as you can. Practice pronouncing it even if you don't understand what all of the words mean yet.

    • 7

Rent movies in Afrikaans. Turn the subtitles on, but try not to pay too much attention to them. Focus on what is being said.

    • 8

Download free Afrikaans software from the Transparent.com website. You can use this software in conjunction with the lessons on the African Languages Online Tutor site, although they will not align precisely with one another.

    • 9

Practice reading children's books written in Afrikaans. Download "About Bunnies," at Childrensbooksonline.org. As your reading skills improve, you can try reading newspapers or magazines written in Afrikaans.

    • 10

Listen to Afrikaans children's audiobooks. Download "Eekie Eekhoring," at AudiobooksCorner.com. Listen to audiobooks frequently so that you become more and more familiar with the proper pronunciation. If you can find a print copy of the book, read along with the narrator on the audiobook.
