      Study beauty therapy at a university. Earn a degree at an accredited university in the area of beauty therapy. Verify that the university offers National Vocational Qualifications. Study the basics of the industry and complete core coursework to narrow your specialization. Focus on beauty services, waxing procedures, nail art, electrical and laser procedures and other beauty art. Narrow degree program to management if your area of interest is managing a day spa or beauty salon. For a technician or beauty therapist position, follow the core curriculum of the program for a comprehensive framework of the services offered (see Resources below).

      Complete a certificate program. Study the areas of anatomy and physiology to learn about skin types and the application of various treatment procedures. Follow with coursework regarding waxing procedures, facial therapy services, manicure and pedicure hygiene and care instruction, as well as other brow shaping and tinting processes. Certificate programs vary by institution and can range from a 1- to 2-year certificate or diploma program (see Resources below).

      Participate in an apprenticeship training program or internship. Apply for an internship to receive tutoring and guidance in a salon. If no internship program exists, speak with a manager or the owner(s) to define the terms of the training agreement. In this instance, you will work in exchange for industry knowledge and experience; college credit will not be applied (see Resources below).

      Gain work experience. Learn from a professional Beauty Therapist to gain practical experience. That experience will move you beyond a theoretic framework to working with clients or assisting a professional in a working salon.
