How to Build Battery Operated Tea Candles

A battery-operated tea candle is a lighting fixture that looks like a tea candle, but that creates light using an LED bulb instead of an open flame. There are many advantages offered by battery-operated tea candles--they are safer to use, they don’t smoke and they won’t leave a waxy film on your walls. You can buy these candle alternatives at craft and home décor stores, but you can also build your own.

Buy your supplies. You will need to find an LED bulb base that will fit the size of candle you want to create. These bases house the electronic components for your battery-operated tea candle and can be found at craft stores, home improvement stores and department stores in the lighting section. Next you will need to pick up an LED light that will fit the base that purchased. If you want your candle to flicker look for an LED bulb base that has a flicker or shimmer setting. Generally you will need 2 AA batteries or 2 AAA batteries to power your candle. Finally, you will need to buy a piece of Plexiglas that you can bend and shape. This can be found at craft stores and at home improvement stores.

Assemble the foundation of your battery-operated candle. To do this you will insert your batteries and LED bulb into the LED bulb base you bought.

Design your candle surround. The simplest way to do this is to create a circular wrap out of the Plexiglas sheet. Cut the Plexiglas to the height you want your candle to be and cut it long enough to wrap around your LED bulb base. If you want to add a design to your Plexiglas surround all you have to do is take a heat proof paint or marker and draw or paint a design on your surround. If you are not a natural artist then you can use a stencil to create your design.

Attach your battery-operated tea candle surround to the base. Use hot glue to connect the surround to the base and to close the two ends of the surround together. You can use paperclips to temporarily hold the ends together while the glue dries. Let the glue dry, remove the paperclips and turn on your battery-operated tea candle.
