Where Can I Go to Study for My GED?

The GED, or General Education Development credential, is granted to people who pass an exam measuring basic skills, knowledge and the application of such. A five-part series, the GED covers math, science, reading, writing and social studies. You can't take it online because it's federally monitored by the American Council on Education. The test isn't a difficult one if you study for it, so finding the proper place for study materials and help may be crucial for passing it.
  1. Classwork

    • You can study for the GED much as you would have during high school, by taking a series of classes. Many areas offer GED Prep courses at local schools or training centers. Teachers and tutors are available to help you through the information that's likely to appear on the actual tests, and practice exams will be made available to you. This is the best method to prepare for the GED because having the instructors there to answer any questions you may have ensures you'll be as well prepared as possible. The courses are likely to cost you in order to take them, but sometimes free programs are offered through community or volunteer organizations.

    Home Study

    • There are two ways for you to study at home for the GED. The first method involves study using a GED Prep book. The prep books cover the information likely to appear on the GED exam, offering it in an easy-to-understand manner, and include practice tests to better prepare you for the exam structure. Good prep books include "McGraw-Hill's GED: The Most Complete and Reliable Study Program for the GED Tests" by McGraw-Hill, and "Peterson's GED Success, 2007" by Marion Castellucci, both available through Amazon.com or through your local public library.

The second form of home study that may be available to you comes through your local public television station. Many of these stations offer courses covering the GED, and while they won't be as useful as an in-person course with an instructor to provide personal help, they're still well suited if you learn in a more visual manner and need more than the study books. Check your local listings for availability.

    Online Study

    • Courses are available online for you to study for the GED. If you go with an online course, you can choose from a large variety of course types available. Some of the courses are little more than interactive study guides. They'll present the information and take you through practice exams to determine your grasp of the information. Other courses are more involved, offering you nearly the same resources as those available at a training center or school. You'll have an instructor available for help throughout the course and a set schedule for the preparation, including periodic exams to test your comprehension of the coursework. Online courses like those taken at training centers will likely cost you to attend.
