Learning English for Adults

In 2004 to 2005 there were over one million adults in federally-funded English as a Second Language (ELS) programs. ESL programs are run by public and private institutions which vary in skills taught, cost and duration. A class or program is not required to learn English. It can take a person with no knowledge of English 5 to 7 years to develop a working and functioning knowledge of the language.
  1. Speaking

    • Find a native speaker to practice daily. Do not be afraid of making mistakes because they help you learn. Use podcasts, tapes or CDs, and computer programs that require you to repeat words and phrases out loud. This will help you hear and master sentence construction and pronunciation. Try watching TV programs, newscasts and movies in English and repeating words and phrases out loud. Listen to English language music and try to sing along.

    Reading and Writing

    • Memorize basic words and phrases which can be found in books, travel guides, computer programs and online ESL resources by writing them down. Begin with the basics of grammar found in a book or guide to learn verb conjugation and sentence structure. Read an English newspaper daily and consult a dictionary for words you do not know. Write a letter to an English-speaking friend or colleague. Keep a daily journal of English words you learned and review it daily.

    Resources

    • Use the resources in your community; local libraries, school districts, colleges, universities, religious institutions and ethnic or cultural organizations hold classes or programs to help adults learn English. Seek the aid of a native speaker to serve as a speaking partner or tutor. Borrow or purchase ESL books and computer programs. Search for free or discounted online exercises and podcasts so you can practice English daily.
