Correctional Education Schools

For some students, correctional education is the last, best hope to achieve an education and avoid the revolving door of the prison system. Correctional education takes place in prisons, county jails, and reformatories. Programs include vocational, technical and academic instruction. Correctional education varies by state. While most schools are funded by state and federal monies, private grants and donations provide certain programs.
  1. Windham School District

    • The Windham School District provides education for the incarcerated population of Texas. It includes regular academic programs, as well as technological and career offerings. Its mission is to reduce recidivism through education and help inmates become productive members of society. It also aims to help paroled offenders become self-sustaining through legitimate employment. Schools are located in correctional facilities throughout the state. Classes include english as a second language, special education, and training in computer information systems, diesel mechanics, computer maintenance, and business image management.

    Virginia Department of Correctional Education

    • Operating throughout the Virginia correctional system as an independent school system, the Department of Correctional Education's goal is to encourage inmates to seek higher education and/or employment upon release. Classes are held in adult and juvenile correction centers, boot camps, detention centers and day reporting centers. Testing and assessment is conducted on all students. General Equivalency Degrees (GED), and 22 different trade programs are available to the juvenile population. Assistance is given for SAT prep and college applications. The adult population may choose from 37 trade programs, along with literacy classes and social skills instruction. A limited amount of post-secondary education provided by grants and donations is available.

    Hacienda LaPuente

    • In partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Hacienda LaPuente offers programs to Los Angeles County Jail inmates. The Correctional Education program includes 150 teachers and administrators and other personnel, with over 150,000 inmates enrolled. Approximately 600 GEDs and 80 high school diplomas are awarded annually, along with 600 vocational and academic certificates. According to its website, it is the largest provider of educational services for incarcerated individuals in the United States. Its mission is to both focus on learning and encourage productive change in the lives of its students.
