Training programs are available for students pursuing a diploma, associate degree or professional certificate. Due to the extensive training and internship work some programs require, most students take up to two years to obtain a medical office specialist degree. Students may also complete their training through correspondence or online courses.
Students enrolled in medical office specialist training programs learn both administrative and health care skills. This includes courses that provide training on medical terminology, medical billing and office software, medical coding, transcription and medical insurance regulations. Students may also need to take anatomy, CPR and first aid courses in order to assist medical staff with patients.
Admission requirements for training programs may vary. However, most technical schools and colleges require students to have a high school diploma or GED along with a basic knowledge of computers.
